| Art Exhibit Honors School No. 25’s First Through Third Grade Reading Program
- Features Multi-Faceted Program Including Students’ Work–
Nathaniel Hawthorne School No. 25 administrators and students, Frontier Pioneers and representatives from Magic Dragon will gather to celebrate the opening of the “Wild About Reading – Unmasking Creativity” exhibit. The exhibit will highlight aspects of the students’ Wild About Reading program and will feature student writing as well as student-created animal masks, which were featured in Magic Dragon, a national scholastic publication.
The media is invited to attend this opening and interview students, school administrators and members of the Frontier Pioneers.
About the Program: As part of this comprehensive language arts program focused on animals, students have been listening to stories read aloud by Frontier Pioneers, a local volunteer group comprised of current and retired Frontier employees. Students also researched their chosen animal using donated classroom books and the Internet. They explored their subject’s habitat, diet, and defining characteristics and were able to connect their research to real-life experience during a field study at Seneca Park Zoo.
In art class, the students created masks representative of their animal and during a recent assembly, students presented their research and masks to the entire school as well as Frontier employees. The Winter 2007 edition of Magic Dragon featured nine of the masks created by School No. 25 students through this program.
