For the second time this school year, a truckload of classroom supplies will be donated by Staples to the Rochester Children’s Zone, Inc. for distribution to the 12 city schools located in the Zone in northeast Rochester.
The donation will take place Friday, January 18 at the RCSD Service Center, 835 Hudson Avenue. Thirty pallets of school supplies will be dropped off at the facility’s loading dock at 11:30 a.m. and volunteers will be on hand from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. to organize the items for distribution. The delivery is being made for Staples by Key Logistics of Henrietta, which is providing a tractor-trailer truck and driver at no cost.
“Community support for our schools is tremendously important to our success as a school district,” said Rochester Superintendent of Schools Jean-Claude Brizard. “Staples’ donation will allow students who face some of the most challenging conditions in our city to have the tools they need to learn and grow. It is an example of the kind of school-and-business partnerships we need to foster to support student achievement.”
"The Rochester Children's Zone, Inc. Board of Directors is grateful to Staples for this extremely generous donation to the schools in the Zone area,” said Shaunta Collier-Santos, RCZ Board of Directors’ Resource Development & Communications Chair. “We look forward to building a stronger connection between local businesses and the community in partnership with the Rochester City School District. Staples’ commitment to our schools helps make sure that every student is prepared to learn and for that we say thank you."
In September, Staples also donated a truck full of supplies to RCZ, Inc.
The Rochester Children’s Zone (RCZ) consists of a section of Rochester that has the greatest concentration of poverty and its attendant challenges in the areas of health, education, social services, economics, and safety. RCZ’s goal is to provide a mechanism for delivering coordinated community services and intervention for children and families. Initiated by the Rochester City School District with community support, oversight for RCZ now belongs to the Rochester Children’s Zone, Inc., an independent, not-for-profit organization.
The RCSD continues to support efforts within the Zone and its schools in collaboration with RCZ, Inc. and other partners. Also, RCSD has appointed a liaison to help coordinate the work being done in RCZ schools and within RCZ, Inc.
Since RCZ’s formal launch in 2006, there have been increased donations of school supplies and additional partnerships established with community agencies to provide after-school programs, health services, tutoring, mentoring, student and family support, alternatives to suspension, and early childhood services.
