A Step-by-Step Look at the Kindergarten Registration Process
When you arrive at the Parent Information & Student Registration Center to register your child, a staff member will help you with every step of the registration process. Be sure to bring all the documents necessary for registering your child.
You should allow at least one hour for this process, including the completion of all necessary paperwork.
Here’s what you can expect:
- A staff member will briefly explain the registration process to you. Spanish-speaking staff members are available for those who prefer to speak Spanish.
- You will be asked for your child’s birth certificate and immunization records. These will be photocopied and the originals returned to you immediately.
- If you do not have your child’s birth certificate, you will be given the information you need to get a free one.
- If you do not have your child’s immunization records, Parent Center staff can fax your pediatrician to obtain those records.
- You will be asked to fill out some forms (emergency contact information, medical information, etc.).
- Your child’s picture will be taken so that it can be entered in the District’s computer system along with her or her information.
- You will meet with a School Selection Specialist to complete the registration process. You will be asked to present a photo ID and proof of address; these documents will not be photocopied.
- If your child speaks a language other than English, Parent Center staff will put you in touch with a language specialist to determine the programs and services that will best meet your child’s language needs. (For information about the District’s Bilingual Education Program, click here.)
- If your child’s primary language is English and you are interested in a Dual-Language program, Parent Center staff will give you more information and a referral for testing. (For information about the District’s Bilingual Education Program, click here.)
- If your child has Special Education needs, Parent Center staff will put you in touch with a specialist to determine the programs and services that will best meet your child’s needs.
A Note to Parents of Preschoolers:
If you have a child who will be four years old by December 1, 2007, you can also register that child for pre-kindergarten at the Parent Information & Student Registration Center. Please bring the same documents that are required for kindergarten registration. (If you do not have your child’s birth certificate and your child was born in Monroe County, the Parent Center can obtain a temporary copy of your child’s birth certificate for purposes of pre-K registration only.) |
