About the K.B.A.

For more than 20 years the Kids Basketball Association (KBA) has been very instrumental in developing the skills of boys and girls in the Rochester City Schools. The concept of 5th and 6th graders competing against each other in a high school type atmosphere was very appealing to the founders of the now 13 team league. The idea was to help these future student-athletes be better prepared for the next level both athletically and academically. Since all of the volunteer coaches worked in the buildings (as teachers or paras)with their players, they were able to monitor their daily activities. They served as coaches, counselors, big brothers and mentors. Men like Phill Johnson and Andre Hicks, two of the original coaches, realized that if our students had a basketball in one hand, they needed a book in the other if they were going to be successful in life. Over the years many schools have participated in the KBA. Some for a year, some for several years and some like Phill and Andre for many years. The commitment is high. Tryouts at each school usually starts in October. The season begins the first week of December and ends with a double-elimination tournament in March. It is well know as our "March Madness" tournament. Practices are held at 7:30am at many schools because they can't use the gym after school. There is no budget provided for these schools so, they fundraise to buy uniforms, pay insurance, van transportation, and game officials.
