Rochester Board of Education Announces New District Leader

Over the last six months, the Rochester Board of Education has deliberated on the qualities needed in a superintendent to best serve the needs of District students and families at this time.  After conducting a wide-ranging search, community survey, and exhaustive review of candidates, the Board is pleased to announce that Ms. Barbara Deane-Williams will serve as the next superintendent of the Rochester City School District.

Ms. Deane-Williams has over 30 years of leadership experience and a deep commitment to serving RCSD student and families through a focus on equity and excellence.  She is currently the Senior Deputy Superintendent of Boston Public Schools (BPS), where she is responsible for the redesign of the central office to serve schools, labor relations, safety, school operations and the Build BPS Master Facilities Plan.

In addition to having extensive leadership experience in one of our nation's most diverse urban public school systems, Ms. Deane-Williams is no stranger to the Rochester area. Most recently, she served as Superintendent of Greece Central Schools, where she earned national recognition for her work in developing teacher and principal leadership capacity.

Noting that this appointment represents the first time that a woman has been chosen to serve as the permanent superintendent of the Rochester City School District, School Board President Van Henri White stated that Ms. Deane-Williams was selected because “she has a track record for putting students and families first. Moreover she is a strong and experienced leader who has a track record for getting things done in a collaborative and positive manner.”

Finally, White commended the Western New York Educational Services Corporation (WNYESC) for having led the search for the District’s next superintendent. As part of its efforts to assemble the finest pool of superintendent candidates in recent memory, WNYESC actively recruited candidates - including Ms. Deane-Williams - who had not applied, but who might be a good fit for the District.

On behalf of the Board of Education, Board President White commented, “The Board of Education wishes to thank everyone who assisted in the superintendent search process:  from the parents who responded to surveys to the stakeholders who participated in focus group discussions.  We are especially appreciative for the efforts of WNYESC for their diligence in leading this effort.”
