In February 2016, the Rochester Board of Education convened a Special Advisory Committee to explore the feasibility of establishing a military academy in Rochester. The members of this Special Committee included students, teachers, community leaders, and members of the military services, all of whom volunteered their time to examine military academies throughout the country, effective models for urban education, curriculum and instruction. Surveys were conducted to learn of student, parent, and community interest and concerns regarding creating a local military academy.
The final report of the Advisory Committee will be reviewed by the Board’s Finance Committee and Excellence in Student Achievement Committee, and ultimately advanced to the full Board of Education for consideration. If approved by the Board, the planning process would require approximately one year and approval would also have to be obtained from the New York State Education Department.
