What We Do
The Workforce Preparation Program was formed in 1992 to work with the Rochester City School District on education restructuring initiatives. It is an employer organization in Rochester, New York consisting of representatives from large, medium, and small multi-industry companies, the Rochester City School District, county and city government, colleges and universities, and employer associations. Workforce Prep seeks to facilitate, coordinate and collaborate business-education partnerships to increase student performance.
The Rochester City School District Superintendent has set measurable performance benchmarks for the entire education system; the Workforce preparation program on behalf of the business community, sponsors and implements some of these benchmark programs.
Workforce Prep's focus is on two major educational reforms moving to higher educational standards and school-to-work initiatives. These efforts must be linked and the role of the employer is critical to help make them successful. Today, whether our young people go on to college or directly into the work environment, the required core skills are the same academic achievement, ability to learn and communicate, interpersonal and group skills, and problem solving. Without these, our youth will not find successful careers and employers will not have the high quality personnel needed to compete in the global marketplace. Employers have a critical role to insure success. We must:
promote high performance standards, both academic and attendance
hire based on academic achievement
join an employer group that provides a united employer voice for quality education
provide students with quality work experiences
provide teachers and counselors with workplace expectations
|
The Workforce Preparation is involved with programs that support these criteria. Our Youth Apprenticeship and Certificate of Employability Programs work with students at an age when they can make a real impression on them, instilling a real work ethic, as well as showing them the importance of school. The programs also help students develop skills matched with employer needs. The result is a motivated workforce to meet the competitive needs of the market today and in the future.
The Workforce Preparation is managed by a Steering Committee that meets monthly. Board of Investors meetings, to which funding members are invited, are held twice a year.
