Jean-Claude Brizard became Rochester Superintendent of Schools on January 2, 2008.
His experience includes a 21-year career as an educator and administrator with the New York City Department of Education. Prior to coming to Rochester, he was Senior Executive for Policy & Sustainability, developing policies related to “portfolio schools” including small schools, career and technical education, gifted and talented programs, and prekindergarten.
He previously served as Region 6 Superintendent, supervising 100 K-12 schools serving 100,000 students in three New York City districts. Region 6 serves a diverse population of students, 61% of whom are economically disadvantaged. Over four years, Region 6 students made consistent gains in grades 3-8 math and ELA scores.
Brizard also established GED-Plus, an afternoon program for high school students at risk of dropping out, and worked to remove two schools listed as “persistently dangerous” from the state’s list.
His previous positions in New York City include:

  1. Executive Director for Secondary Schools
  2. Region 8 Instructional Superintendent
  3. High school principal
  4. High school physics teacher
  5. Junior high school science teacher

Brizard is a graduate of the Superintendents’ Academy of the Broad Center for the Management of School Systems. The program is a 10-month executive management training program preparing top executives from the business, non-profit, military, government and education sectors to lead urban public school systems.
He holds a Master’s Degree in School Administration & Supervision from The City College of New York and a Master’s Degree in Science Education from Queens College, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Queens College.
