When Grief Enters the Classroom

The Rochester City School District has a rich history of excellence in urban education. Our schools provide a quality education for more than 34,000 students in pre-K through grade 12 and 11,000 adults.

Rochester offers opportunities for students to enroll in world-class programs with world-class teachers and staff in supportive communities of learning. Our ongoing academic success is the result of the hard work of our students, the dedication of our employees, the generosity of our community partners, and most importantly, the involvement of our parents.

Elementary Schools

Each Rochester elementary school has its own personality—a combination of people, Central Officeprograms, and partnerships that meet the needs of students with specific interests and abilities. All of Rochester’s schools are committed to helping students reach high academic standards and their full potential as individuals.

A strong academic foundation, enrichment activities that nurture creativity and growth, caring teachers and staff, community partnerships, and an emphasis on values and citizenship are all a part of the Rochester elementary school experience.

Secondary Schools

Strong academics, top-notch arts and athletic programs, a diverse student body, committed teachers and staff, partnerships with colleges and businesses, and extracurricular activities that develop tomorrow’s leaders are all a part of the Rochester high school experience.

Students can choose from programs focusing on science and health, business and finance, teaching, media and communication, computers and technology, law and government, international studies, engineering, the arts, skilled trades, advanced studies, and many other specialty areas.

Rochester schools are also fortunate to have a strong commitment from partners in the community who support them in providing the best experience possible for students:

  • Colleges offer opportunities to visit their campuses, earn college credit, and obtain scholarships.

  • Local businesses provide workplace experiences linked to school programs, giving students a head start in the careers of their choice.

  • And community organizations provide a network of student support in areas from health and social services to academics and leadership development.

Diversity. It’s one of our greatest strengths.

Rochester’s schools provide an education that far exceeds academics alone. Respect for others, appreciation for different cultures, and awareness of the value of diversity are part of the fabric of Rochester city schools.

The student body includes children from 28 foreign countries speaking 35 different languages. Among the District’s U.S.-born students, too, there is a wide range of backgrounds and heritage. Every student is unique, bringing his or her own personal experience, culture, and beliefs to the classroom.

That’s a level of diversity you won’t find in any Monroe County school district other than Rochester.

We invite you to visit Rochester’s schools to see the quality teaching and learning taking place and to learn more about what we have to offer your family.
