Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School No. 9 is one of the largest bilingual elementary schools in the Rochester City School District. School No. 9 provides a comprehensive elementary program that prepares children to be diverse learners in the 21st Century. The faculty and staff integrate technology and curriculum to provide a holistic education program in a nurturing and support learning environment. To support our community of learners, students and staff wear uniforms that consist of white tops and blue bottoms.

  • To allow intermediate grade youngsters (3-6) to integrate technology to support their learning, each classroom has a visual presenter, LCD projector, and a computer center.
  • To support independent reading and research, your child can visit our library and multimedia center.
  • To develop students’ primary language as well as a second language, we offer a Bilingual Education program with a full-day Bilingual Pre-K program.
  • To provide safe after-school activities, we partner with Baden Street Settlement, offering students opportunities to participate in basketball, soccer and swimming.
  • To support the transition to high school and the teenage years, our staff and the ROOTS organization provide mentoring relationships to our sixth grade boys and girls, helping develop their ability to make positive choices.
  • To celebrate learning and student work, we have annual festivals, fairs, and presentations including poetry celebrations, non-fiction presentations, and winter carnivals.
  • To ensure all children meet New York State learning standards, we provide tutoring support services before and after school, including Blossoming Readers, STAR Readers and, for speakers of other languages, Early Morning ESOL.
  • To broaden our youngsters’ learning beyond our school walls, we collaborate with community partners to provide field trips and guest speakers, support curriculum studies and provide individual one-to-one tutoring support.
  • To support student achievement, our PTA provides programs that help parents support their children’s learning and enhance their own knowledge of the curriculum.
