The staff at School No. 57 provides a warm, nurturing, child-centered environment where each child is empowered to grow into an effective problem solver and responsible citizen. As an early childhood school (pre-K through grade 2), our motto reflects our philosophy: “Small Steps Today – Giant Leaps Tomorrow.” Our small size (230 students) allows us to build a strong home-school relationship with each child and his/her family. Our instructional program provides support throughout all grade levels to help children become successful learners. Our annual school improvement plan, created by staff and parents, guides our instruction.

  • Instruction is focused on each child’s unique learning style. Materials are presented at the child’s
appropriate reading level and advanced based on student successes.

  • Literacy block contains 90 minutes of Readers Workshop, Writers Workshop and emphasis specific
    reading skills.

  • Accelerated Reading program, a supplemental computerized program, is offered daily to all first- and
second-grade students to support specific reading skills.

  • All students in grades K-2 use a computer program entitled Lexia which strengthens skills necessary for reading.

  • Schoolwide morning meetings are held once a week to showcase student learning and build a sense of
    community. Parental involvement is welcome.

  • Extended-day program is offered two days a week after school to support students with reading and
    math skills.

  • Activities that promote citizenship and character development are integrated throughout the
instructional program. Good citizenship is specifically promoted through our “I Spy” program, Student of the Month recognition and Safety Patrol program.

  • Three large, community celebrations showcase student achievement: our Black History Dinner, a
celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and the grand opening of our science museum.

  • Educational partnerships with Engine 5 Fire Department, Jefferson High School (reading support), Strong Hospital, Constellation and Mobil Exxon Corporation enhance our school community.

  • PTCA (Parent Teacher Community Association) sponsors school-related initiatives as well as cultural
activities and assemblies such as Family Reading Night, Family Math Night, Literacy Bingo and guest
speakers on topics of interest to parents.
