Chester Dewey School No. 14 welcomes students with its small school atmosphere in which each student is well known and cared for. School staff are committed to building positive relationships with parents, students, and the community. We strive for academic excellence to ensure that every child succeeds in reaching his or her learning potential and meets or exceeds academic standards. We celebrate diversity by recognizing our students’ many backgrounds and integrate their cultures into all subject areas. Through a variety of challenging instructional programs, support systems, and community partnerships, our students are encouraged to set goals and move forward to become successful lifelong learners and productive citizens.
- Located on the corner of University Avenue and Scio Street in walking distance to the city’s cultural district (museums and theatres) and public market.
- Uses Best Practices in teaching “The Workshop Model” used in all academic areas.
- Has community partnerships with St. Mary’s Church, Jewish Community Federation Coalition, University of Rochester Medical School, Boy Scouts, Xerox, St. John Fisher College, Nazareth College, Junior Achievement, Eastman School of Music, and Encompass Learning.
- Offers integrated opportunities for students with learning disabilities.
- Hosts Annual Family Bingo Night, Parent ELA Night, Parent Math Night, PTO.
- Offers a language enrichment program called the Learning through English Academic Program (LEAP) for students K-6 whose native language is not English.
- Celebrates student achievement through monthly book assemblies, character trait of the month, concerts, and displays of student work.
- Promotes positive behavior through the SMILE program.
- Uses portable computer labs in classrooms for reading, math, and research.
