Program Development
We
believe that all Rochester City students can master English, and become
proficient in a second language, to expand their cultural understanding
and maintain a competitive edge in the job market of the 21st century.
To
that end, we are committed to developing rigorous, standards-based
instructional programs in Bilingual and Dual Language Education,
English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Learning English
through Academics Programs (LEAP).
Bilingual
programs are defined as programs that utilize the native language as a
means of learning content, while students are learning English. In
Rochester, these programs are available in Spanish.
Buildings that offer Bilingual programs
include, schools No. 9, No.17, No.22, No.28, No.35 and Monroe High School.
Dual Language programs are defined as programs where students learn two languages
simultaneously, with half of the class learning English as the second
language and the other half learning Spanish as the second language.
Buildings that offer Dual Language programs include, schools No. 12, and No.33, and Monroe High School.
LEAP
programs are defined using a sheltered English approach to learning
content for students whose native language is not English. There are
several language groups combined in each LEAP class, with English as
the primary means of communication.
Buildings that offer LEAP programs include, schools No. 5, 14, 15, 50 and Jefferson High School.
All Schools offer ESL programs.
