José Cruz recently retired from the Monroe County Legislator having served a full term of ten years representing the residents in Northeast Rochester. He was the Ranking Minority Member of the Legislature's Human Services Committee and served as a member the Agenda and Charter Committee. He also served as Minority Leader of the Democratic Caucus.
 
José graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and Monroe Community College. He also completed a specialized internship in Community Development through Pratt University in Brooklyn NY.
 
As a student leader at Franklin High School, José was one of several founders of Franklin High School's Puerto Rican Student Union, which later became the Puerto Rican Youth Development & Resource Center, Inc. (PRYD). José is a past President of the Board of Directors at the Ibero American Action League. He recently helped facilitate the historic merger of PRYD and the Ibero American Action league, ensuring additional services to Latino youth. José serves on several other Boards of Directors including: Ibero Investors Corporation; Secretary of the Legal Aid Society; Charles Settlement House; Empire Sports Authority and is a Trustee of the Allendale Columbia School in Pittsford.
 
Professionally, José works for the City of Rochester as an Administrator of the NW Neighborhood Services Center. The NSC works with residents and homeowners to insure people have safe and adequate neighborhoods. His prior professional employment includes: mortgage origination at Bank of America and HSBC; Owner, Allstate Insurance agency; CEO, Worker Ownership Resource Center, a micro-business development agency; and Housing Development Director, Ibero American Action League.
 
José and his wife, Maria Diaz Godreau, live in northeast Rochester. They have four children and one granddaughter Jaylee. Daughters, Liana, a graduate of East High School and the oldest, currently is a Navy Chief Petty Officer; Ariel is employed by the Legal Aid Society; and Marielee is a senior at Aquinas High School. Son, Marcos, is a sophomore at The Ohio State University.
