Reading Rewards Tip-Off Celebration with Syracuse University Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim and Guard "Scoop" Jardine visit Wilson Foundation - November 9, 2011
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Syracuse University men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim and team captain "Scoop" Jardine visited the Wilson Foundation Academy on Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 to help the school kick off a new program that motivates students to read by rewarding them with incentives and prizes.
The Ticket to Reading Rewards program is sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation, a collaboration of college basketball coaches and business leaders. It aims to motivate middle school students to read 25 books outside their typical classroom assignments.
Students earn prizes for every five books they read, with rewards ranging from wristbands and cinch bags to medals and mini basketball hoops. The top Wilson student will receive a trophy and advance to compete against students from other similarly sized schools.
The program was started in 2002 in the Chicago Public Schools, where students who participated typically improved their reading skills by a grade level.

"This is an excellent opportunity to promote literacy and to motivate our scholars to develop a love for reading," said Wilson principal Julie Roselli. "We are always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to motivate students toward independent reading."
